5:00am rolls around quickly every day. It comes even faster on a Saturday Morning. The light of day was gently peeking around the heavy curtains in the bedroom window to see if I was awake. The cool air in the house had long driven me into the caverns under the heavy comforter. Unable to sleep, I lay there alone hoping my wife and her sister were having an enjoyable time at the women’s conference they had been looking forward to for so long. As sleep found me once more and began to coax my eyelids closed once again I was stirred by the sound of tiny feet on the vinyl floor in the hall. As I rolled to face the door, a dark outline not yet 3 feet tall stood facing me quietly.
As I squinted to let the light focus on my precious girl’s face, I saw blankets and teddy bears filling her arms as she began moving toward me.
“Daddy” was the only word her scratchy little voice could muster this early. Without wasking, she began handing me the blankets and teddys for me to hold while she climbed the mountain of a bed I was in. Within seconds her hed was buried in her Mommy’s pillow and her eyes were again closed.
For an hour I watched as the Sun made it’s way into my room and gently revealed the precious gift beside me. Her jet black hair no longer the little sprouts that made everyone giggle because it was so short and cute. Now well past her shoulders, this mass is just as wild as she is. I watched as her eyes seemed just barely closed. With every movement under her eyelids, I wondered what adventure she might be dreaming of. Her peaceful look brought warmth to my heart to know she felt safe and secure in her home.
As I thought of the great blessing it was to be a father, her peacefulness convinced me of the necessity to return to sleep. About the time consciousness left me, my sweet darling girl decided it was a blessing to be a daughter and she jumped on my belly shouting “Daddy! Get Up Get Up!” Life is good.
