The experience that night with the pencil rekindled hope within us. It didn’t remove the frustration we held with the constant delays and seeming chaos within the various entities handling our case. It was more than upsetting to be told day after day for over a year that it might be tomorrow or next week. Then it became almost to much to be told that we should simply expect this because it was a part of the culture that has developed within the government. One positive that was developing out of our situation was the growing awareness in the states of the problems here.
Days passed and Kristina finally had reached what seemed to be her end. She asked me to inquire and so I did. However, we were again told that there was no way to know what was happening within the walls of the PGN. Because of the constant support and updates I was reading on the Guatemala Adoption Forum I knew there had to be a way. I pressed our lawyer to make an inquiry into the case as he was the one who thought we should have been out by February. It was now almost March and we seemed no closer than before.
Our lawyer called back and nonchalantly told Kristina that the papers were not to be expedited and that it may be a month or more before we could expect an exit from the PGN. Kristina was so upset and her voice was drenched in the tears she was crying when she called me. Three weeks ago we were told a congressman met with the PGN director on our behalf and that due to our circumstances the case would be expedited. Now three weeks later with no news we are told that nothing of the sort was going to happen and that the PGN process had just begun. Needless to say Kristina was a tad bit upset.
I immediately called our friend in Guatemala and told him to please get in contact with his friend in the congress. There were rumors on the board that the director of the PGN may have his days numbered. With a potential change in leadership there was all the likelihood that a slowdown or shutdown would take place until the dust settled. I asked our friend to put the clamps down if at all possible.
The next day…well read it from the pen of Kristina

6:20 PMOur day started just as usual as it always does. After my devotions this morning I prayed and my prayer was simply, I am tired I can’t do it anymore. I know God said He will never take us beyond our limits and I had reached mine. I thanked Him for never leaving me nor forsaking me and for His goodness and love. I told Him I still knew and trusted that He was in control of everything and He would work this out.
Around 1:30pm Marcelo called the house and asked for me. I said hello and he asked me how was I doing? I told him ok I guess then he said he had news. I simply replied ok. Then the words that came out of his mouth next totally shocked me. He said, “Your papers are finished!” WHAT???? Then he repeated himself. I could not believe what I was hearing, I felt like I was dreaming. He told me he was calling Edwin to tell him to go pick up our papers from PGN. Praise God!!!! I thanked him and hung up. I immediately called Cody. When he answered I sounded depressed and said Marcelo just called and (Pause) our papers are finished. Cody started hollering and crying and praising God. We both were ecstatic. Our adoption is officially over, Mia is now ours, a precious gift from God.
Now we work on the paperwork to get her home. Next week we will go get the birth certificate. I pray the judge just signs the paper immediately and does not make us wait for weeks. It is in God’s hands, I will continue to trust Him. Thank you Lord!
So if the story of the PGN ended there I wouldn’t have named this post as I did would I? Well as it was a Friday, our lawyer barely made it to the PGN on time to pick up the file. Even so, when he arrived he was not given the file. Apparently the reviewer who handled it still had it and was already gone. Monday when our lawyer returned to the PGN he was told…again hear it from the heart of the one who was there for those many months.

9:53 AMWell we were supposedly done with PGN last Friday. But, of course, something happened. When Edwin went to get the papers this past Monday he was told by the reviewer that we were missing one paper from Xela. This was very frustrating for us. We had a meeting at PGN yesterday at 9am. We found out that we had to have this paper and Carlos and Oswald were going to Xela to pick it up. By the time they got the papers they had to have from Edwin it was to late to drive to Xela so they left early this morning. I am glad Carlos is going because they should not have any problems with the judge. Supposedly they are going to get the papers and then take them back to the reviewer for him to see then straight to Merida’s office for him to sign again. So who knows if we will be done today or tomorrow. Things are never what they seem here. I am thankful I have people here to help.
They returned from getting the papers around 2pm, they did not have any problems getting them. I am not sure what the plan is now. I guess they will take the papers to Edwin today and probably PGN tomorrow (I hope).
