Days passed achingly slow both for Kristina and I as we awaited any sort of news from the PGN. Having been a part of the Guatemala Adoption Board for over a month, I was aware that trying to guess a timeline here was tricky and unwise. However, over a year ago, we had both sat inside the office of the director for over an hour discussing our case and meeting with officials. Then as the abandonment came to a close, the PGN official was there and signed our paperwork as well. On top of all this, on of Kristina’s close friends was the wife of a congressman in Guatemala. He was very close with an official who we thought might be a reviewer. She said at the very least he would try and give us an inside update on what was happening. To this point we had heard nothing and February was slowly creeping away.
Finally on February 13th, Kristina received a call from our lawyer saying he actually had our PGN case number. Just having something concrete was an incredible feeling. Though it made us no closer than before, it gave us a sense that we were in the PGN for real. Quickly she called the congressman who in turn said he would be in touch with his PGN contact. By now, there was no more “getting our hopes up” An exit right now would still mean that this adoption was around 16 months long. Too long.
One thing that you learn when you are involved with an international adoption is that the weekends become torture. This may be true with domestic adoptions as well but I can only speak for what I have experience with. As the weekends approach, what normally is a relieving end to a hard week of work becomes an indication that for at least 2 days no work will be done on your adoption case. Here we sat knowing our adoption was finally in the office it needed to be in to be completed and yet nothing was being done. Frustrating…
