Part 1 of 2
It was one of those days that smacks you in the face and never apologizes. Reality hits you at 100mph and you never saw it coming. Lulled into a comfort zone of my own making I was unprepared for the phone call I was about to receive. I had learned to deal with the disappointing calls. You know when it was claimed paperwork had been completed days ago and now it apparently would be another week. This was another story altogether.
Just days after learning that all of Mia’s paperwork was ready, our lawyer contact Kristina and asked if she would accompany him to Santa Maria Chiquimula in the region of Totonicapan. Of course Kristina agreed knowing that her presence would likely assure that things were completed, as they should be. However, Mia would have to make the journey as well, which Kristina was worried she might be starting to become travel weary from trip after trip. No one who knew English very well was available to accompany our lawyer and Kristina but our friend’s 18 year old daughter rode along. The journey to Santa Maria Chiquimula is a difficult one. Though the name contains “Chiquimula,” it is actually in the opposite direction of the Chiquimula region. It is located in Totonicapan, which is a mountainous region north of Panajachel and Quetzaltenango. After 3 hours of driving, the road becomes windy and treacherous. It is the only route in or out of the area where Santa Maria Chiquimula is located.
While I was calmly at work on this day, the following events were taking place a world away. I didn’t learn of any of this until after the fact. That evening Kristina called me with a fatigued voice and her first words were: “I’m OK.”
That can’t be good…
