The days following our decision to adopt weren’t suddenly filled with a magical aura that made everything better in our hearts. We did however have a focus to begin working toward adoption. We knew very little about the adoption process and we knew we needed a lot of work to understand what we were going to do. One of the first questions that hit us was where we intended to adopt from. We visited social services in our county in Virginia. They were nice but very overworked. We didn’t get a lot of direction when visiting them. So then we headed to the internet to read up on domestic adoptions. All the while a thought kept pressing into both of our heads privately but one in the same. That thought was simply “adopt from Guatemala.”
A little background will show that Kristina and I aren’t into telepathy or anything like that. Instead, we both have been involved with mission work in Guatemala for years. During our time spent there, we had the opportunity to visit some of the poorest government orphanages. At that time, we both said that if we ever reached the point of adopting a child, we would adopt from here. The question often is asked of me why we adopted from Guatemala when there are kids here in need of homes. The conditions the children in the orphanage we visited captured my heart and the commitment we made years before was one we purposed to keep.
Defining the direction our adoption would take began to remove the ache that dwelled in Kristina’s heart. She lost the notion that she would never be a mommy and realized that she would after all. She began to feel as though she had purpose and direction. In her heart, she knew there was a baby out there or on the way who needed her to open her arms and become mommy. She thought of the difficult decision the birth mom would have to make. While hurting for her, she was glad that the birth mom could be assured her child was going to a loving home.
Shortly after coming to the agreement that we would adopt internationally, we received a phone call from Guatemala that would alter the course of our lives forever…
