July 2005 did not get any easier for either of us. On July 12th after a very depressing day of bad news, Kristina fell down a flight of stairs while holding Mia and landed on a ceramic tile floor. Thankfully, Mia was OK as Kristina had the presence of mind to shield her. Kristina however did not fare so well as she had a painful gash on her back and a slightly sprained ankle. Both would be fine but it just seemed to add to the drama of the month.

After finally getting the necessary paperwork to have a second X-ray done, Kristina took Mia to the hospital at 6am to wait in line. When the test results were finally received a few days later it was almost laughable. The first test showed Mia to be 5 months and now it had her at 4 months. Maybe we could market her formula as the fountain of youth! Anyway, the judge did not know what she was going to do about the situation.

By August, things had changed dramatically in our lives. The university I worked for did not like the uncertainty of our situation and asked me to resign my postition. They made me a great offer and I decided it was time to go. I moved our household to North Carolina to be near Kristina’s family. The transition was almost more than I could take without the support of Kristina being there but her family is tremendous and their encouragement made it possible.

We still had heard nothing from the judge’s office by the end of August as we were told “Maybe next week” and “call back tomorrow.” However, finally on August 27th of 2005, our friend Maria from Quetzaltenango called and said the papers were completed and were available for our lawyer. We were ecstatic thought the enthusiasm was muted after a whole summer of discouragement.

Would Kristina be home in early fall…though it looked that way it’s not likely. Guess who’s coming in September? Come back to find out!
