In the attempt to bring you every possible resource available, often I will review organizations designed to meet the needs of specific people. The HFLA was created in 1897 to benefit the Jewish community by offering interest free loans according to their belief. According to their site:
In parsha Mishpatim, God tells Moses and the people of Israel that they may not derive personal benefit from loans made to members of their community – in other words, they may not charge interest. Indeed, this practice has proven to be an integral part of Jewish life for centuries, reflecting a commitment to this ancient ethical teaching. It is the foundation – the inspiration – for the Hebrew Free Loan Association.
The HFLA boasts a 99% repay record and they use the money that is repaid to then loan to other individuals. The types of loans vary but there is a specific mention of an adoption loanuf up to $10,000 to help Jewish individuals pay for the costs of international or domestic adoption.
The HFLA has given more than 50,00 loans in their time of operation. While the HFLA serves San Francisco and Northern California, if you do not live there, it may be worthwhile to call them and see if there is a similar program in your area. (If so, email me and let me know!)
If you have had an experience with this program or know someone who has, please comment below and give us more information on them!
