Restaurant Name: Casa Escobar
Location: 6ª avenida norte, Antigua, Guatemala
Cost: $8.00 – $15.00/person
Moose’s Delight: Now I’ve only eaten there once but their steak was unbelievable. We couldn’t even eat all of the sides we were given!
Website: Haven’t found one yet!

Drive down 6ª avenida norte in the afternoon and you will eventually come across a man in a very traditional elegant Spanish outfit handing out flyers to passersby. He is fun to look at as his outfit is usually very colorful. However, it won’t be long before the focus of your brain will shift from the bright colors your eyes are presenting to it down to your nose where the amazing smells are being introduced inviting you for the steak of your life!

In June of 2004, not long after we were given foster custody of Mia, my mother went to Guatemala to spend a week with Kristina and help her get adjusted to motherhood while she was still adjusting to being in this country. While staying at the Posada La Merced, they walked by the Casa Escpbar each time they traveled down to Central Park and to all of the stores. Finally they decided to venture in for a fine meal and what they fully expected to be an expensive meal. Kristina defined there time there as “pleasant” and the food as “incredible.” She told me over the phone that she could not wait for the opportunity to bring me to this restaurant. After getting far more than they could eat, they were presented with the bill which was about Q160 or about $20 for the both of them.

That September, I was visiting my girls and we too stayed the week in Antigua at Posada La Merced (which became our place of choice). On my birthday, Kristina planned for us to visit the Casa Escobar for a special dinner. We walked out in the typical evening rain and made our way down the cobblestone streets to the restaurant. The staff greeted us kindly and showed us to our seats. They took extra special attention with Mia to make her smile as we made ourselves comfortable in the oversized booth.

From the moment the first appetizer hit the table to the time I put the fork down on the empty dessert plate, my senses were pleased. We again were given such a plentiful amount and the cost for us was around Q180 or $23. The staff was so courteous to us even taking a picture of us to remember this special birthday by.

Make sure you visit Casa Escobar but be sure to bring your appetite or a wheelbarrow to bring home the leftovers!
