Recently, it was pointed out that some of the locations in a commercial for Cargill products looked very familiar to those who have been in Guatemala. The spot dubbed “Tiendas” follows a delivery driver riding one of those familiar motorcycles with the refrigerated pack on the back. Through the town and past many tiendas (small stores) where he delivers goods to the merchants.

It would have been interesting enough to watch and reminisce on it’s own. However, the words “La Esperanza” appear on the side of a building at the beginning of the commercial. This has caused some parents to wonder whether or not this may be the orphanage that goes by the same name. The thought has caused more than one person to inquire on the matter.

So feeling investigative, I contacted Cargill and asked them myself. Shortly afterward, I received a nice email from Bruce Behounek,Senior Brand Manager, about the Cargill commercial and its location.

We have received quite a lot of favorable feedback about that particular spot. I was on hand for the filming of the commercial which took place in and around the city of Antigua, Guatemala, and a few images from Guatemala City. The “La Esperanza” (The Hope) building shown early in the spot was only a tienda, and not an orphanage.

Mystery solved. It still is a cool commercial that actually shows a few places that we visited while in Guatemala.

That being said, there has been some debate I read about companies like Cargill being contributors to the economic and social problems in Guatemala. I’m not sure I completely agree with that view but I’d like your thoughts!
