I’ve never been much to wear jewelry of any sort. Wearing my wedding ring was the first time I wore jewelry for any period of time at all. Sure when I got my class ring I wore it for a week. When our football team took the championship it stayed on my hand for two weeks. However, jewelry and me never mixed real well. That is until my daughter and wife bought me a little wooden necklace for my 30th birthday. I kept it on until the day she came home from Guatemala (almost 7 months later!) and then put it up as memorobilia. Now the only necklace I wear is a dogtag style necklace with a pendant that simply says “30 hour famine.”

Here is how the Adoption Shops describes this pendant.

The artist inspiration behind this piece was his parents. It was created to convey the belief that we are dependent on particular people in our life for certain things and at some point that dependency is reversed. This piece depicts that wonderful cycle of life when those accustomed to giving care become the ones being cared for. Thus the artists’ statement, “Holding my hand you gave me your comfort and strength. May I, with grace, return the many favors and hold yours becomes evident.

Through this gift created from love came the idea to have an heirloom piece that you can provide to those you love and value. Take this gift and make it your own. Remember, the significance is your reason for wearing the piece or choosing to give it.

This piece is Sterling Silver (.925) and all pendants come with a sterling silver chain.

30 Hour Famine
Both of the necklaces I’ve owned are more than just jewelry to me. They are a reminder of what I hold to be dear in my life. The wooden necklace is a constant reminder of the time I was separated from my wife and daughter while we worked to bring her home and the tender moments we spent together as I visited them in Guatemala. The other is a reminder of an event our teens hold each year to help eliminate hunger in our world. It is a sobering thought that each day 29,000 children will die from hunger and preventable causes. This is also why this “In The Palm of My Hand necklace looks so cool to me. What a great reminder of the gift I have been given and the tremendous responsibility I have.

Often it is difficult or even impossible to find the right gift for the fathers. It seems to come quite easy to find Mom and baby a gift but Dad’s can be hard to shop for. Even if the dad you are buying for simply puts it on his dresser as a reminder each day of his role in this child’s life, it will be an awesome gift.
