The Hague did not get passed in its third reading in the Guatemalan Congress. The congress begins its summer recess today which continues until August 1st. What will happen next is a big question mark. If nothing is done by the time the Hague is ratified by the US, adoptions from Guatemala will cease.

"Joint Council has confirmed that the Guatemalan Congress passed the first reading of the reaffirmation of the Hague Convention and corresponding amendments on Tuesday, May 8th. On May 9th the Guatemalan Congress passed the second reading , with the third and final passage expected Tuesday, May 15th."

I’ve been using the words “Hague Convention” since I started blogging over a month ago. It preoccupies and on some level terrifies a lot of us, especially people presently adopting from Guatemala.
